In Transit

Dave Monroe lets the text speak for itself: “‘Thro’ our whole gazing-lives, Venus has been a tiny Dot of Light, going through phases like the Moon, ever against the black face of Eternity. But on the day of this Transit, all shall suddenly reverse,– as she is caught, dark, embodied, solid, against the face of the Sun,– a Goddess descended from light to Matter.'” (M&D, Ch. 9, p. 92)

Yo Yoing on the overground train

Tina Richardson sends word that post horns, books and other Pynchonalia found their way on to trains around Ely, a small, swampy fenland city usually best known for its cathedral. A pronunciation key might make reference to Torpedos. It is: eely. Anyway, I think it now has a far greater claim to fame!

Dave Monroe in the Fog

Renowned P-Lister (hey, he’s cited in my Ph.D.!) Dave Monroe looked among the fog, waiting for something different this time. Seems he found a pile of books among the haze, but I can guess the author.

Have my card…

Doing business, PiPD-style. Now I have business cards for conferences (let’s face it, though, it’s pretty grim to go to academic humanities conferences with business cards, so I don’t use them much), but if I had *these* cards, I might be more keen to distribute! Martina Tognon thought so, anyway…

Athens Gets the Horn

Although there’s little antagonism going on here, the Greek Pynchon bunch put in a pretty good effort. Also, congratulations to Dr. Yorgos Maragos for passing his (Pynchon-related) Ph.D. viva!

1984

Pynchon is interested in Orwell. He wrote an Introduction to Nineteen Eighty-Four, set Vineland in that year and published his collection of early stories, Slow Learner, in 1984. That said, posing with Pynchon in the Big Brother diary room chair might be taking things a little far. Well, Jane Byford didn’t think so…

Lions and Tigers and Bears… Oh my!

Ian Burdon: “Irving Loon, still singing to himself, produced with a smile a box of .30 calibre ammunition…”
